The drinkers usually perk up when they realise I have a car and can give 4 drunk people a lift home. After a couple of years of having this happen at work events (and having to pay for others's booze tacked on to the bill for a group meal) I just stopped going. I used to drink but stopped in my mid-30s when my mother became terminally ill. Now I find booze makes people rather boring. It is rather tiring having people I barely know interrogate me and ask if I'm an alcoholic. It is rather odd how uncomfortable my not drinking makes others.
If I've learned anything from the incomparable Captain Awkward, it's that there are many fun ways to hand their discomfort right back to them. But that one stands alone.
"I'll answer that question when you tell me why you really drink"
Sigh. Now people can just passive aggressively send this article.

Beautifully written and lots to think about.

This is so thoughtful.
My favorite response to this question: "Why do you ask???"
"It's a deep state thing"
