There has been much talk about the oral medication: zuranolone. It is for post-partum depression. It is not a revolutionary treatment. It works…here is the outcome from the FDA approval trial:
Now, here is the already approved treatment that is not a pill—it's brexanalone, which treats the same condition.
We already have the best treatment for post part in depression. It is rapid and lifesaving—possibly for mother and child both.
It's complex to deliver1. It’s expensive. And it works remarkably well. So I ask: why are we not taking the lives of new others and that their young child seriously? We have preposterously effective treatments that lead to a shocking reduction in symptoms in 24 hours time.
We have a solution. We ignored it because it involves logistics. Why are we excited to offer something worse2 —but easy—for new moms?
This is a step backward for women, families, and medicine.
