RAMHT 2024 Highlights
More highlights from the revolution in rapid acting mental health treatment.
The Frontier Psychiatrists held its first in-person event in San Francisco before JPM. Grady Hannah, my fellow innovator and the conference's co-founder, points out the message….worked!
Here are a few takeaways from the conversation…
Rapid Acting Treatments are More Accessible
Kalli Ortega, of the Meleos Group: (TikTok link…follow me!)
Kalli’s crucial point is that people are likelier to get a treatment that works quickly. It's a big deal to take a lot of time off work. People are more likely to get a treatment that can be done rapidly, like accelerated transcranial magnetic stimulation. If you're a working person like most of us are, taking time off of work every single day is unrealistic. Taking a couple of days off in a row can be much more in keeping with your life. SAINT neuromodulation is done in 5 days, for example.
Rapid Acting Treatments Build Trust: Matthew Tucker of Nightware:
The nightware device is helping you sleep better after two nights. Fast matters! We build trust by having an impact quickly.
As Carlene MacMillan, M.D. of Fermata and the Clinical TMS Society Board of Directors
points out…
Professional societies have a significant role in advocating for novel treatments, both with payers and infrastructure for payment. At the end of the day, if it's not paid for under a rubric that the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services understands, then it's not gonna be available to the vast majority of people covered by Medicare. Then, most commercial insurance follows Medicare's lead.
This means measurement, as we heard from Loren Larson from Videra Health, which is building AI tools to collect and assess video data to understand novel biomarkers. But that doesn't stop them from collecting rating scales we are already familiar with to track outcomes now in behavioral health.
These are just a few of the highlights from RAMHT2024, and we are grateful for sponsorship from BrainFutures and Magnus Medical as well!
It was such a hit…there will be more of these real-life newsletter events coming. We are also dedicating a subsection of The Frontier Psychiatrists to ongoing coverage of rapid-acting mental health treatments. It will be up there in the top bar under “RAMHT.”
