Being Shot With a Gun is Now the Leading Cause of Death for Children in America: An Evergreen Press Release

Back in 2022, I wrote this article the first time. This week, the surgeon general made the announcement about the risk of gun violence, which I strongly support from a public health perspective. The original point of this article was to notice the endless cycle of gun violence in America, particularly as it applies to children. It's some dark satire…in the form of a press release.

This piece is dedicated to the memory of Ana Grace Marquez Greene, a beautiful child I watched grow up as part of my extended jazz music family before she was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

According to the New England Journal of Medicine, children being shot to death is now the leading cause of death for children in the United States of America. It’s not a leading cause of death.
